Gilbert Residence
Sugarhouse, UT

Inspired from the paintings of Dutch modernist Piet Mondrian, the landscape becomes an arrangement of blocks, colors and lines. The simple grid pattern originates from the front door, giving it prominence. A variety of textures, sizes, and colors were carefully chosen for both the stone paths and blocks of plant materials. Native and waterwise plants were selected; including rabbitbrush, ornamental grasses, desert willow, parry agave, lavender, sages, thymes, day lilies and the brilliant orange of the hummingbird-magnet penstemon pinifolius. The garden includes unique details such as corten steel retaining walls, a living stone gabion fence, a stone dust planting bed and a recycled sandstone block path.
